Budget Friendly Closet Makeover

A couple of weeks ago, while I was cooking dinner, I heard a loud crash from upstairs. When I went to check, I found my closet rod had completely fallen off the wall—clothes everywhere.

Instead of getting frustrated, I decided to see it as a chance to do a little closet refresh on a budget.

Since it happened on a Sunday and I work full-time, I chipped away at it throughout the week. By the next weekend, I had a closet that felt organized, fresh, and so much more functional.

Here’s how I did it!

The Budget Breakdown

I wanted to keep this project affordable and easy to pull together with just a few pieces. Here’s what I bought:

  • Target bookshelves (2) – $73 with Circle discount- I found ones very similar on Amazon, which are linked in my store, and this way you don’t have to go pick them up!

  • Amazon clear dividers (4 pack) – $16

  • Amazon closet rods with hardware (two 17–28”, one 17–43”) – $28

Total: $117

The Process

  1. Clear it out
I pulled everything out of the closet. It’s amazing how much better you can see the space once it’s empty. I used this as an opportunity to get rid of a few things too. I donated a couple of bags of things I had not used to my friend’s church, which was having a clothing drive.

  2. Assemble and anchor
I built the two bookshelves and anchored them securely to the wall for safety and stability.

  3. Add rods
Next, I installed the new adjustable rods. One at the top of each bookcase and one to the left of the shelves to maximize hanging space. You could really confiture the hanging section however you like.

  4. Add dividers
On top of the bookshelves, I added the clear dividers to keep sweaters and folded items neat and contained.

  5. Little extras
For now, I removed the closet doors—they were always sticking and never closed properly anyway. I’ll also be adding some self-adhesive hooks soon for even more storage.

The Result

For under $120, I completely transformed my closet into something more functional and streamlined. I love how much cleaner it looks, and it feels like I gained storage without doing a full renovation.

Sometimes those unexpected mishaps—like a closet rod crashing down—turn out to be the perfect excuse to create something better.

What do you think of the update?
Would you ever try a budget-friendly closet refresh like this?

Happy organizing!
