The Old Familiar Creative Tug
Lately, I’ve been feeling that familiar tug of creativity. It’s hard to explain—it just creeps up on me, and suddenly I feel this deep, almost restless need to make something.
Maybe it’s knitting, maybe it’s making a card or sewing. But when I’m not creating, there’s this quiet, nagging sense that something’s missing. It’s always been that way for me.
Every summer as a kid, the best part of my day was arts and crafts at the little park down the street. I’d wander over with a quarter in my hand, so excited to see what we’d be making that day.
I’ve been writing since I was little too—won a poetry contest when I was about ten. It wasn’t a big deal but I think I had that sense of wanting to write my entire life.
Looking back, I think I’m at my happiest when I have both the time and the energy to create. Running my Etsy shops and blogging filled that need for a long time. Now that I have less time to devote—and only sell my sheet music pockets in my shop—I often find myself searching for something. And more often than not, making something is it.
Gardening and cooking fall into that same category for me. There’s creativity in all of it—planning, designing, bringing something beautiful or nourishing to life with your own hands.
I think there’s something really special about giving gifts we’ve made. It feels like sharing a little piece of ourselves—our time, our intention, our heart. Over the years, when time permitted, I’ve made and gifted everything from quick, simple things like handmade soaps or jars of soup, to more personal touches like cards, scarves, flower bundles, even quilts. One of my favorites was the blanket I made for my daughter—more than a gift, it felt like a stitched-together love letter.
The point is, creativity doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Sometimes, it’s just about the act of making—the quiet joy in doing.
